Scheduling Changes

It looks like I’ve gone and managed to get myself a “real” job, which unfortunately means making some changes in how certain features will be posted on the blog. This Week’s Menu, Tumblr Tuesday & Friday I’m in Love probably won’t change much, but $1 Dates will probably become a bi-weekly feature and Dames Who Make Games will become a monthly feature with the exact posting schedule TBD.

I’ve absolutely loved the feedback on Dames Who Make Games, both from readers and subjects alike, and it’s easily one of my favourite features to produce. Unfortunately it is also one of the most time consuming, so to keep up the level of quality and allow me time to find the best interview subjects, I’ve decided to run it a little less frequently so that I can focus on making it the best it can be while also trying to make a little money for Rick and myself.

It’s a little daunting to reenter the job market after over a year of running a business and working freelance, but it’s a step I need to take so that Rick and I can move forward with our many goals together. We’d like to finally take our honeymoon in Japan, save up for an apartment of our own and maybe adopt a French bulldog or two, and while I’ve enjoyed my time as a “housewife” these past few months, we need a steady second income to reach those goals.

I’ll still be pouring my heart into Gamerwife, but with less time to commit to blogging I think quality over quantity is the way to go.

WordCamp Montreal 2012

This weekend I had the opportunity to attend WordCamp Montreal for the second time since I started blogging using WordPress. It was fun to catch up with people I hadn’t seen in a year and get some new tips on how to delve into the meat and bones of how the system works.

It was really incredible how much more of the technical details I managed to grasp this year, although I’m sure compared to most of the other attendees I’m still a hopeless noob. But it did give me a lot more confidence regarding at least one of the exciting personal projects I alluded to previously and it made me more excited about pursuing technical projects in general.

If you like using WordPress and want to learn more about it, or are ready to start getting more technical, I definitely recommend checking out a WordCamp near you.

Blog Changes

Blogs And Coffee Print

I Love You Blogs and Coffee print for sale here.

I decided to take advantage of the long weekend and spent a little time tweaking the ol’ bloggy-blog. I opted to remove the “Housewifery” category from the navigation menu at the top of the site since I don’t think anyone was using it and other than This Week’s Menu there weren’t that many posts in it. Instead, I’ve created separate buttons in the sidebar for each of the weekly features on Gamerwife, including This Week’s Menu, Tumblr Tuesday, Friday I’m In Love and Happy Caturday.

I also added a sponsorship information page in the upper navigation bar and a couple of sample ads in the side bar, so if you know of anyone who might want to advertise on the blog, or be interested in sponsoring a post or a give away, please contact me.

Getting Excited

The last few weeks have been pretty crazy here at Gamerwife HQ. I’ve been working on a new feature that I’m really excited about, I’m looking at doing some guest posting for other sites, setting up a Facebook page for the blog and I’m going to be moving Gamerwife off of WordPress.com.

That’s right kids, I’m gonna be self hosted!

That said, things might be a little wacky looking for a week or two while I get any transfer issues worked out, but it’s all to bring you an even more awesome Gamerwife experience. If you’ve subscribed to the blog on WordPress, you will need to update your RSS feed if you want to keep getting updates on new posts, but I’ve got a nifty little button at the top of the sidebar to help you with that.

There’s a few different reasons I’m going the self-hosted route, but one of the cooler perks is that I will be able to start accepting sponsors for the site. I’m still working out the details on that, but I want to keep rates low for independent businesses and other makers of cool, nerdy things that you would like. I’m gonna wait until I’ve got all the self-hosting kinks worked out, but expect more news on this soon.

Now back to squeeing…

Tweaking

I was kind of bored this Sunday so I decided to fix up the old bloggy-blog. Custom fonts and templates were a little out of my budget at the moment, so I opted to just whip up a new background and a new header. I even gave myself a one hour crash course in PhotoShop for the header. It’ll probably be changing a lot in the next little while as I try to up my skills, so bare with me and let me know what you think as it evolves.
