As a kid, I had a hard time making and keeping friends. Actually, it’s something I still struggle with. I’m not 100% sure why that is, I’m sure there’s actually a whole lot of things working together, but over the course of the last couple of years, interacting with groups like Female Geek Bloggers, Pixelles and even Geek Girl Brunch, I’ve finally started to realize how important strong female friendships are and have started working harder at maintaining and nurturing my relationships with the awesome women in my life.

Which is why this year for Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided to make up a little gift guide celebrating everyone’s favourite holiday honouring lady friends: Galentine’s Day. I’m sure most of you are familiar with this made up holiday, created for the show Parks and Recreation, but just in case you aren’t, Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13 as a way to tell all the amazing women in your life how much you love and like them.

In keeping with the theme I’ve chosen handmade items all inspired by Parks and Rec, focusing on things I would like to give to or receive from my best gal pals.

Galentine's Day Gift Guide

1. Pawnee Goddesses Patch – Ferdinand Works| 2. Be The Leslie Knope Mug – Charm & Gumption | 3. Leslie Knope Inspired Candle (Waffle Scented) – Folklore Fragrance | 4. Best Friend Waffle Necklaces – Scrumptious Doodle | 5. Sisters Before Misters Cross-Stitch – Bananya Stand

I’m extra excited for Galentine’s Day this year because Geek Girl Brunch Montreal is going to be hosting our first Galentine’s brunch, complete with waffles and mimosas!

How do you plan on celebrating Galentine’s Day this year?

Everything is awesome! I was planning to go to the Galentines day party at Espionage Cosmetics storefront, but that’s been canceled so I’ll probably forget to do anything. I might send my friends some Galentines though!

Thanks, Kelsey! And I’m mostly excited for Galentine’s day as an excuse to buy those Valentine’s packs you used to get in school.

I haven’t heard of this before, either! I think for my two lady friends (who are my rocks) the gifts would be simple: anything with cats for one, and chilled wine for the other πŸ˜›

I’m loving that sisters before misters cross stitch! Very cute.

There are so many amazing quote cross stiches from that show. I’m also partial to “uteruses before duderuses” and “ovaries before brovaries.”

Galenine’s day is the BEST! I love the Pawnee Goddess patch – my friend actually got me a print of that for Christmas, but a patch seems so much more *official* of the goddesses.

I love that there are people making patches for all kinds of fictional groups. Hope your Galentine’s is full of waffles and friends!

    Absolute perfection!
I adore Leslie Knope and anything Parks & Rec flavored. Galentines Day is basically the best holiday ever created by a fandom (possibly only?).

Totally. I will do everything I can to raise it’s prominence and make it a “real” thing.

We still haven’t caught up on the last season, but Rick and I both have crushes on Leslie Knope, although for slightly different reasons.

Oh Mariko I totally understand! I have found it is really hard for me to make friends. I’m not sure if it is me and my awkwardness or a combo of a lot of different things. I have 3 friends that have stood the test of time but I manage to be on the opposite side of the world from all of them.

Yeah, moving across the country has definitely made it harder to connect with my friends back home, but I’m glad I’m making an effort this year to put my female friends first.

Yeah, I’m really surprised at how difficult it is to find good waffles in Montreal. There are a lot of ties to Belgium, but that doesn’t seem to translate to good waffles.

Yeah, I still get intimidated by women a lot more than I should, but I’m really trying to celebrate the women in my life more.
