As a long-time closet goth, Halloween is obviously my favourite “holiday,” even if I rarely get a chance to dress up and go out these days. To this end I thought it might be fun to share with you some more casual cosplay looks especially for Halloween, but in trying to figure out what characters to create outfits for I was initially stumped.

While this is primarily a video game site, I don’t actually play that many (okay, any) horror games and I felt weird trying to create looks based on characters I’m not familiar with. I then moved on to horror movie icons, but even that left me a little cold. As much as I love Freddy and Jason, all it really takes is a striped jumper and a hockey mask and Bob’s your uncle.

Which is when it finally hit me. Who were my favourite horror icons?

Simple, the classic monsters of the Universal horror films.

I’m a big lover of all things truly classic, and it does get more classic than Boris Karloff as The Creature and Bela Lugosi as Dracula. There’s just something so cool and classy about those old movies, made right at the dawn of the talking picture era. I know I’m an old soul, and it genuinely saddens me that a lot of people won’t even give black and white movies a try because they think they’re “boring.”

Ain’t nothing boring about these bad boys. Granted the “horror” value is probably a little camp by today’s standards, but it’s fun to imagine what it would have been like to see these movies when the first played in movie palaces. Imagine sitting with women jumping out of their seats, or next to men fainting from fright (this totally happened).

While I have nothing against torture porn and gore, there is definitely something to be said for a classier, more atmospheric approach to horror. Which is why I went for very sophisticated, almost understated outfits for both characters.

I think these are great! Definitely captured the classic aspect of the original costumes, and the outfits are quite classy themselves. As a goth kid (and grownup) whose wardrobe is primarily black/dark neutrals, I would happily wear both these outfits!

Ha! I love all of the outfits! They are all really easy to do albeit a little bit hot for where I live but still fun none the less.

Yeah, they’re approaching been too cold to wear where I live right now. Although, overcoats would still work.
