Sometimes you want to play a sprawling, fantasy epic where you get to pick flowers, learn blacksmithing and wander the countryside slaying dragons for 150 hours. Other times you want to drive around the city, robbing prostitutes and smashing tanks into things for 200 hours. And then there are the times where you just want something you can play over a cup of coffee that’ll drive the crankies away.
With game development tools becoming more and more accessible and game jams becoming more and more popular, there is starting to be a preponderance of short, silly games that are available online for little or no cash. While you can play all of the games on this list for free, two of them do give you the option of making a small donation to support the developers. These games won’t be winning any awards anytime soon, but they can be just the thing to put a smile on your face when you’re feeling down.
Here are 3 of my favourite free games I can count on to cheer me up.
Vin Diesel DMing a Game of D&D Just For You
This one does exactly what it says on the label. Basically a text adventure augmented with promotional shots of everyone’s favourite unlikely dungeon master, VDDAGODADJFY has an infectiously optimistic vibe that will have you grinning from the moment you boot it up.
Get it on itch.io.
Jeff Goldblum Staring Contest
Again, this is a game that is pretty much summed up by the title. This early effort by Zoe Quinn (yes, that Zoe Quinn) is goofy and quick and pretty much required playing for anyone with a Jeff Goldblum fetish (which, let’s face it, is everyone).

My Garbage Cat Wakes Me Up at 3AM Every Day
This game describes a struggle that Rick and I can relate to intimately. In MGCWMUA3AMED, you get to take on the role of the titular “Garbage Cat” and do everything you can to make noise and fuck shit up until your beleaguered owner finally gets up to feed you.
