Big Action Mega Fight! (BAMF!) Review

Some of my best video game memories are of playing classic beat ’em up titles at the local Chuck E Cheese with my brother and sister. Turtles in Time, X-Men Arcade. Anything where I could slam on a joystick and mash buttons until I magically managed to unlock a combo was my jam.

More recently, console-based brawlers like Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World The Game have brought my button-mashing fever right into my living room. So, when I heard that Montreal’s own Double Stallion had released a brawler for mobile, I was skeptical, but I knew I had to give it a look.

BAMF Splash Art After playing until my hands were sore, I have to say that Big Action Mega Fight! (BAMF! for short) is every bit as fun and furious as I remember brawling back in my arcade days. The touch controls are incredibly intuitive and give you a great sense of engagement as you rapidly swipe up and across to pummel your opponents. Other moves like drawing a circle to throw take a little more time to master, but the curve is gentle enough to make you feel like you’re really progressing as you unlock new moves and combos.

BAMF iPhone 5 screenshot The setting is straightforward and did remind me a bit of Scott Pilgrim in that you progress across a map of the city. You play as a mustachioed thug named Brick tasked with cleaning up the city one punk at a time. Smashing jerks and inanimate objects will give you coins to spend on upgrades and special moves, as well as steaks and turkey legs to replenish your health. Also, there are chickens that explode. You should avoid those.

BAMF Level up Screen The game is incredibly polished and full of cute little in-jokes like the phrase “A winner is you,” displayed when you complete a level or the inclusion of a depaneur in one level. I also noticed a sign for Dude Chilling Park, you crazy Canadian kids.

All in all, BAMF! is just a super solid game. Buttons are big and clear, leveling up is satisfying, and the gameplay is just plain fun. Levels are just the right length to bash out one or two on the metro, making it perfect for pickup and play. I also really like that achievements make sense, in that I usually know before I’ve even finished the level whether I’ll get a full three stars or not. In short, BAMF! gets a big huge Gamerwife recommendation.

Oh, and did I mention it’s free to play? Seriously, what are you waiting for?

Future updates will include new playable characters, including a girl (!) I can’t wait!

Big Action Mega Fight! is available now FOR FREE on on iOS with an Android version due to release soon.
