Have you seen Conan O’Brien’s new segment, Clueless Gamer? In it, O’Brien, who apparently wasn’t even into video games back in the day, rather grumpily plays a variety of popular games with the help of staff writer Aaron Bleyaert.
What’s really great about the series is how genuinely disinterested Conan seems in most of the games he’s asked to play. Most of his time is spent beating on Bleyaert, both verbally and physically, or trying to pick up the female NPCs. The punchline of each segment is the ridiculously convoluted, improvised rating system he uses, which only serves to underline his near contempt for the whole exercise.
With the media constantly reminding us of video gaming’s pop culture triumph, it’s oddly refreshing to see someone you would expect to be into this sort of thing reacting so sourly to every aspect of it. It’s a nice dose of reality and makes me feel a little better about my own gaming noob-ship.
